THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD
Matthew 22:29 ...Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the
power of God.
Nahum 1:2-9 God is jealous, and the LORD avenges; The LORD avenges and
is furious. The LORD will take vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves
wrath for His enemies; 3 The LORD is slow to anger and great in power,
And will not at all acquit the wicked. The LORD has His way In the whirlwind
and in the storm, And the clouds are the dust of His feet. 4 He rebukes
the sea and makes it dry, And dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel
wither, And the flower of Lebanon wilts. 5 The mountains quake before Him,
The hills melt, And the earth heaves at His presence, Yes, the world and
all who dwell in it. 6 Who can stand before His indignation? And who can
endure the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, And
the rocks are thrown down by Him. 7 The LORD is good, A stronghold in the
day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him. 8 But with an overflowing
flood He will make an utter end of its place, And darkness will pursue
His enemies. 9 What do you conspire against the LORD? He will make an utter
end of it. Affliction will not rise up a second time.
Isaiah 55:8-11 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your
ways My ways," says the LORD. 9 "For as the heavens are higher than the
earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your
thoughts. 10 "For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And
do not return there, But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud,
That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater, 11 So shall
My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void,
But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing
for which I sent it.
Isaiah 40:28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting
God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor
is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.

tread him underfoot. Then his yoke shall be removed from them, And his
burden removed from their shoulders. 26 This is the purpose that is purposed
against the whole earth, And this is the hand that is stretched out over
all the nations. 27 For the LORD of hosts has purposed, And who will annul
it? His hand is stretched out, And who will turn it back?"
8. Numbers 23:19 "God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of

and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation
or shadow of turning.
10. Hebrews 6:16-18 For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath
for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. 17 Thus God, determining
to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His
counsel, confirmed it by an oath, 18 that by two immutable things, in which
it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who
have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.

pass over it.
3. Job 26:12-14 He stirs up the sea with His power, And by His understanding

set the world upon them. 9 He will guard the feet of His saints, But the
wicked shall be silent in darkness. "For by strength no man shall prevail.

beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else. 7 I form the light, and
create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these
things. 8 Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down
righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation,
and let righteousness spring up together; I the LORD have created it. 9

bitter and hasty nation Which marches through the breadth of the earth,

2. Joshua 11:19-20 There was not a city that made peace with the children

to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment
than for you. 23 "And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be
brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had
been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 "But I say
to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day

a. Luke 4:24-27 And he said, Verily, I say unto you, No prophet is
accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows

years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; 26
But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon,
unto a woman that was a widow. 27 And many lepers were in Israel in the
time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman
the Syrian. 28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things,
were filled with wrath, 29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city,
and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that
they might cast him down headlong. 30 But he passing through the midst
of them went his way,
b. John 6:63-66 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth

the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.
65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me,
except it were given unto him of my Father. 66 From that time many of his

of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

was, and is not, and yet is. 17 "For God has put it into their hearts to
fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the
beast, until the words of God are fulfilled.
a. cf. Jude 1:11-13 Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of
Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished
in the rebellion of Korah. 12 These are spots in your love feasts, while
they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds
without water, carried about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit,
twice dead, pulled up by the roots; 13 raging waves of the sea, foaming
up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness
of darkness forever.
6. Jude 1:4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were

bear fruit. You are near in their mouth But far from their mind.
7. Romans 11:5-10 Even so then, at this present time there is a
remnant according to the election of grace. 6 And if by grace, then it

then? Israel has not obtained what it seeks; but the elect have obtained
it, and the rest were blinded. 8 Just as it is written: "God has given
them a spirit of stupor, Eyes that they should not see And ears that they
should not hear, To this very day." 9 And David says: "Let their table
become a snare and a trap, A stumbling block and a recompense to them.
10 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see, and bow down their
8. John 12:37-41 But although He had done so many signs before them,
they did not believe in Him, 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might
be fulfilled, which he spoke: "Lord, who has believed our report? And to
whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?" 39 Therefore they could not
believe, because Isaiah said again: 40 "He has blinded their eyes and hardened
their hearts, Lest they should see with their eyes, Lest they should understand
with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them." 41 These things
Isaiah said when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.
9. Romans 9
b. (vs. 17)
1.) cf. Exodus 7:1-5 So the LORD said to Moses: "See, I have made
you as God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet. 2
"You shall speak all that I command you. And Aaron your brother shall speak
to Pharaoh to send the children of Israel out of his land. 3 "And I will
harden Pharaoh's heart, and multiply My signs and My wonders in the land
of Egypt. 4 "But Pharaoh will not heed you, so that I may lay My hand on
Egypt and bring My armies and My people, the children of Israel, out of
the land of Egypt by great judgments. 5 "And the Egyptians shall know that
I am the LORD, when I stretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the children
of Israel from among them."
2.) cf. Exodus 9:12-16 But the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh;
and he did not heed them, just as the LORD had spoken to Moses. 13 Then
the LORD said to Moses, "Rise early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh,
and say to him, 'Thus says the LORD God of the Hebrews: "Let My people
go, that they may serve Me, 14 "for at this time I will send all My plagues
to your very heart, and on your servants and on your people, that you may
know that there is none like Me in all the earth. 15 "Now if I had stretched
out My hand and struck you and your people with pestilence, then you would
have been cut off from the earth. 16 "But indeed for this purpose I have
raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be
declared in all the earth.
3.) cf. Exodus 10:1-3 Now the LORD said to Moses, "Go in to Pharaoh;
for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his servants, that I may
show these signs of Mine before him, 2 "and that you may tell in the hearing
of your son and your son's son the mighty things I have done in Egypt,
and My signs which I have done among them, that you may know that I am
the LORD." 3 So Moses and Aaron came in to Pharaoh and said to him, "Thus
says the LORD God of the Hebrews: 'How long will you refuse to humble yourself
before Me? Let My people go, that they may serve Me.
VI. The final analysis: Romans 9:20-21 But indeed, O man, who are you
to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, "Why
have you made me like this?" 21 Does not the potter have power over the
clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?
A. Job 38:4,11,12,17-22,33-36; 40:1-14; 42:1-6
c. (vs. 22) cf. Ezekiel 33:11,17-20 "Say to them: 'As I live,' says
the Lord GOD, 'I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that
the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways!
For why should you die, O house of Israel?' 17 "Yet the children of your
people say, 'The way of the LORD is not fair.' But it is their way which
is not fair! 18 "When the righteous turns from his righteousness and commits
iniquity, he shall die because of it. 19 "But when the wicked turns from
his wickedness and does what is lawful and right, he shall live because
of it. 20 "Yet you say, 'The way of the LORD is not fair.' O house of Israel,
I will judge every one of you according to his own ways."
B. Romans 11:33-36 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and
knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past
finding out! 34 "For who has known the mind of the LORD? Or who has become
His counselor?" 35 "Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid
to him?" 36 For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom
be glory forever. Amen.
